Corporate
Chaplain
You've
heard about military, hospital or prison chaplains, but did you know that
more and more companies offer chaplains as an employee benefit?
What
does a chaplain do?
A corporate chaplain's ministry is one of presence. Chaplains will
try to connect with each employee and make them aware that pastoral counseling
is available, especially during emergencies. Chaplains visit sick and
bereaved employees and their families, perform weddings, funerals, baby
namings, etc.
A
chaplain is not an evangelist. Chaplains do not push his/her own religion.
Chaplains provide and teach basic human kindness. Chaplains sometimes
offer spiritual workshops, meditations, social events or lectures.
What's
the risk for the employer?
Could you be sued? Employers are permitted to provide faith-based services
to employees provided they do it without discrimination or pressure. It
has to be voluntary.
Confidentiality
The chaplain is not an employee nor an independent contractor, but a guest.
Conversations with employees and employers are confidential. The chaplain
may keep notes for his/her own purposes, but they cannot be subpoenaed
or shared with anyone except when required by law such as in the case
of child abuse.
What
does it cost?
My services as a chaplain is provided free of charge to both the employer
and the employee. However, donations
are always accepted.
