Consumer Ownership of Public Utilities

Our ultimate goal is to become energy independent through conservation and use of renewable energy sources. Until that happens, we will support efforts that puts control of the public utilities like the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and National Grid closer to us, the users.

Long Island Assemblyman Fred Thiele has introduced legislation (A.4205) that would make LIPA's Board of Trustees elected during the general election. Currently, the Board is appointed by the Governor and Legislative leaders.

We think there is room for improvement to this bill, but it is a step in the right direction, so we will support it until something better is suggested. To support the bill go to the New York State Assembly's Web site at http://assembly.state.ny.us/ and search for your Assembly representative. Handwrite a short letter asking your Assembly representative to support A.4205, "[a]n act to amend the public authorities law, in relation to the board of trustees of the Long Island power authority and repealing certain provisions of such law relating thereto".
